Emmalocera is a genus of moths belonging to the Pyralidae family. The most prominent species, Emmalocera depressella, is a significant pest known for damaging sugarcane and other related cereal crops in various tropical and subtropical regions.
The adult moth has a wingspan ranging from 25 to 30 mm, with straw-colored or brownish wings. They are nocturnal insects, being most active during the night, and are strongly attracted to light sources in their habitat.
The larvae, which are the main destructive stage, have a whitish body with a dark head. They go through several larval instars, growing significantly as they feed on the internal tissues of the host plants.
The life cycle typically spans several weeks, depending heavily on ambient temperature and humidity levels. In optimal conditions, multiple generations can occur, leading to a rapid increase in population density.
Overwintering usually happens in the larval stage. The larvae remain in a state of diapause inside the stubble or dried stems of the host plant, waiting for favorable spring conditions to resume activity.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by the larvae boring into the stalks of sugarcane. By feeding on the internal tissues, they disrupt the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water, directly reducing the sugar content of the crop.
While sugarcane is the main host, the pest may also infest wild grasses and other Poaceae species in the vicinity of fields. This alternative host range complicates efforts to eradicate the pest from agricultural areas.
Signs of infestation
The characteristic sign of an infestation is the «dead heart» symptom, where the central shoot of a young plant withers and turns brown. This occurs because the larva severs the growth point inside the stalk.
Internally, stalks exhibit galleries or tunnels created by the larvae. These tunnels are often packed with frass and decaying plant tissue, which creates a foul smell and serves as an entry point for secondary infections.
Plants affected by the pest often show stunted growth and a failure to produce healthy tillers. The overall yield is significantly reduced both in biomass and the quality of the harvested product.
In infested fields, patches of yellowing or drooping plants are commonly observed. These patches are indicative of larvae activity within the stalks and warrant close inspection during scouting.
Increased lodging of stems is a late-stage symptom. Because the larvae hollow out the interior of the stalks, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, making it prone to breaking under normal wind conditions.
Control measures
Cultural control practices, such as deep plowing after harvest, are essential to destroy larvae and pupae hibernating in the soil and crop residues, effectively lowering the pest population for the next season.
Regular field scouting and the physical removal of infested plants during the early vegetative stage help to prevent the spread of the moth population and mitigate total crop loss.
Biological control agents, including various species of parasitic wasps and entomopathogenic fungi, play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance and reducing the pest's impact on agricultural lands.
If chemical intervention is necessary, the application of systemic insecticides during the egg-laying period provides the best protection, as it prevents young larvae from successfully boring into the stems.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including the use of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity, are highly recommended to ensure precise timing of control measures and minimize unnecessary pesticide usage.
