How to identify

The African sugarcane borer (Eldana saccharina) is a moth of the Pyralidae family. Its wingspan reaches approximately 25 to 35 mm, with a brownish, cryptic coloration that allows it to blend perfectly into the sugarcane stalks where it resides.

Females typically deposit their eggs in sheltered areas, such as under the leaf sheaths or within the cracks of stalks. These eggs are laid in clusters, and their color darkens as they approach the hatching phase.

The larvae, known as borers, go through several larval stages (instars) during which they feed on the internal tissues of the host plant. They have a characteristic head capsule and a body that ranges from pale grey to yellowish-brown.

Pupation occurs within the tunnels bored into the stalks, providing a protected microenvironment. This stage is crucial for the survival of the species during cooler or drier periods.

The life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. In tropical conditions, the generation time is quite short, allowing for multiple, overlapping generations throughout the year.

What it damages

Eldana saccharina is a notorious pest primarily attacking sugarcane, but it also causes significant damage to maize and sorghum crops. The larvae cause direct destruction of the plant's vascular tissues.

Upon splitting a stalk, the internal damage becomes clearly visible, showing longitudinal galleries and the presence of larvae, pupae, or empty pupal cases.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach, focusing on the use of resistant cane varieties that possess tougher rinds, making it harder for the larvae to penetrate.

Biological control involves the strategic release of parasitoids (wasps) that target the eggs and larvae of the moth, helping to keep populations below the economic injury level.

Cultural control is essential, including the removal and destruction of crop residues immediately after harvest to eliminate the overwintering or sheltered habitats for the borers.
