How to identify
The larch moth (Cryptoblabes lariciana) is a small lepidopteran species belonging to the family Pyralidae, known for affecting Larch trees (Larix species).
Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 15–18 mm. Their forewings feature a mottled brown and grey pattern, which allows them to blend perfectly with the bark of their host trees.
The larvae, or caterpillars, go through several developmental stages (instars). They are typically slender, with a changing color pattern ranging from light green to brownish as they mature.
Like many members of the Pyralidae family, these moths are primarily nocturnal, making them elusive during the day and difficult to spot in the dense canopy.
Their biological development is strictly synchronized with the bud burst and early needle development of the Larch, ensuring that larvae emerge when food is most abundant.
What it damages
The primary hosts of the larch moth are trees of the genus Larix. While mature trees can withstand minor infestations, young stands and nursery saplings are at high risk.
Damage is caused by larvae feeding on the needles. They often create silk webs that bind the needles together, creating a protected environment where they can feed undisturbed.
Repeated defoliation by this pest weakens the trees, leading to reduced growth increments and making the larch susceptible to opportunistic pathogens and secondary bark-boring beetles.
In ornamental settings, the larch moth ruins the aesthetic appearance of the trees, causing them to look scorched and sickly during the growing season.
Severe outbreaks can lead to significant needle drop, which inhibits the tree's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently during the height of the summer.
When it appears
The flight period for adult moths typically occurs in late spring or early summer, depending on local climate conditions and the phenology of the larch stands.
Eggs are laid in small batches or singly near the base of the needles or in crevices of the bark. Hatching usually follows within a couple of weeks.
Larval activity peaks throughout June and July, which is the period when most feeding damage occurs as the caterpillars grow rapidly.
The larvae overwinter in protective silken cocoons. These are often tucked away in bark fissures, needle debris at the base of the tree, or between branch junctions.
The species completes one or two generations per year depending on the geographic region and the length of the frost-free season.
Signs of infestation
The most distinctive sign of infestation is the presence of fine silk webbing connecting bundles of needles on the tips of the shoots.
Needles within these webs often turn yellow or brown, and there is visible accumulation of frass (larval droppings) trapped within the silken strands.
During the peak feeding season, premature needle drop is a common symptom, often leaving the branches looking bare or sparse at the tips.
A "scorched" appearance of the larch canopy during the summer months is a strong indicator of a widespread infestation within a forest or plantation.
Careful inspection of the bark surface during the dormant season may reveal the presence of small, well-camouflaged cocoons tucked into deep cracks.
Control measures
In forest nurseries, the application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis is recommended to minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects.
Chemical control via systemic or contact insecticides may be necessary during the early larval stage to prevent the formation of protective webs.
Promoting a healthy, diverse forest ecosystem encourages natural predators like parasitic wasps and birds, which can significantly reduce larval populations.
Sanitation practices, such as clearing fallen needles and debris from the base of young trees, can effectively disrupt the overwintering cycle of the moth.
