The Citrus fruit borer (Citripestis eutraphera) is a member of the Pyralidae family. It is a highly specialized pest that targets citrus species, often causing significant disruption to the development of young fruit and shoots.
The adult moth is relatively small with a wingspan of approximately 20 to 25 mm. Its cryptic coloration acts as camouflage, allowing the moth to blend perfectly with bark and foliage during the daylight hours when it remains inactive.
The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most damaging, as it is during this phase that the insect feeds voraciously on citrus tissues.
Pupation typically occurs in protected environments, such as within the damaged fruit, in the soil, or tucked away in bark crevices. This behavior makes direct intervention during the pupal stage particularly challenging for growers.
