How to identify
The genus Cadra belongs to the family Pyralidae, known commonly as snout moths. The most prominent species is Cadra cautella, often referred to as the almond moth or tropical warehouse moth.
Adult moths are small, typically with a wingspan ranging from 14 to 20 mm. Their forewings are grayish-brown with faint darker transverse bands, while their hindwings are lighter and fringed.
The larvae are approximately 12–15 mm long. They typically have a whitish or yellowish body with a distinct brown head capsule, which is a key feature for identifying them during inspections.
The lifecycle includes complete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs directly onto food substrates, ensuring that larvae have an immediate food source upon hatching, which promotes rapid colonization of storage sites.
Environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity, dictate the duration of the lifecycle. Under optimal warm conditions, the insect can complete multiple generations in a single year, leading to severe infestations.
What it damages
Cadra species are primarily considered pests of stored products. Larvae cause extensive damage by feeding on a wide variety of dried plant-based food items found in commercial warehouses and homes.
Commonly attacked commodities include nuts (almonds, walnuts, peanuts), various grains (wheat, corn), flour, cereals, dried fruits, cocoa beans, and processed confectioneries.
The larvae bore into the food items, consuming the interior. As they feed, they produce silk webbing that binds particles of food together, creating visible nests and contaminating the stock.
The primary economic impact is the loss of commercial quality and weight. Contaminated products are rendered unsalable due to the presence of larvae, webbing, and excreta, which can also promote fungal growth.
Large populations of Cadra can ruin entire shipments of raw materials, posing significant challenges for the food processing and agricultural storage industries.
Signs of infestation
A primary sign of infestation is the presence of adult moths flying near stored products, especially during the twilight hours when they are most active.
Webbing is one of the most recognizable indicators. Larvae spin silken threads as they move, creating matted clumps of flour, grain, or dried fruits that are easily identified during routine inspections.
Physical evidence of larval feeding is visible as small entry holes in grains or nuts. Upon breaking open the kernels, one may find hollowed-out centers and larval excreta.
A musty or rancid odor often develops in heavily infested areas, resulting from the accumulation of waste and the initiation of secondary mold growth triggered by the larval activity.
Sifting through the product or inspecting the corners of storage bins often reveals the presence of frass (larval waste), which resembles fine sawdust and is a clear indicator of active infestation.
Control measures
Sanitation is the cornerstone of control. Regularly cleaning storage areas, removing spilled grains, and disposing of infested products are essential to breaking the lifecycle of the moth.
Using pest-proof, airtight containers is highly effective at preventing moths from gaining access to clean supplies during storage and transportation phases.
Pheromone traps are excellent tools for both monitoring the presence of adult moths and disrupting their mating cycles, which helps to maintain low population levels.
Fumigation is often required in professional storage settings to eliminate severe infestations. Only approved chemical treatments should be used, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.
Temperature management, including cold storage or cooling the grain, acts as an effective deterrent, significantly slowing down or halting the developmental stages of the larvae.
