How to identify

The cactus moth (Cactobrosis longipennella) belongs to the Pyralidae family. It is a specialized pest whose larvae feed exclusively on cacti, posing a significant threat to various succulent species.

Adult moths are relatively small, with a wingspan of approximately 25 to 35 mm. Their wings have a grayish or brownish pattern that acts as perfect camouflage against the dry stems of host plants.

The lifecycle of this moth involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay their eggs directly on the cactus surface, ensuring that emerging larvae have immediate access to food.

The larvae progress through several instars. As they grow, they burrow deeper into the cactus tissue, making them difficult to detect until substantial damage has already occurred.

The moth is most active in warm environments, where it can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population growth in favorable conditions.

What it damages

Cactus moth larvae primarily infest species within the Cactaceae family, with Opuntia (prickly pears) and other fleshy cacti being the most common targets.

The larvae tunnel into the succulent stems, creating extensive internal galleries. This destruction of the inner parenchyma severely impacts the plant's structural integrity and nutrient transport.

By hollowing out the interior, the larvae create large cavities filled with frass. This material serves as a breeding ground for various pathogens, leading to secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

Visible damage often manifests as wilting or the collapse of stems. Once the internal structure is compromised, the plant often fails to recover, leading to eventual death.

In greenhouses and botanical gardens, the spread can be rapid. One infested plant can easily become a source of infection for an entire collection if left unmanaged.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of frass (larval excrement) appearing as dark pellets on the surface of the cactus or at the base of the plant.

Check for small, circular entry holes in the epidermis. These holes are often accompanied by damp or discolored patches as the plant reacts to the tissue damage.

Soft spots on the stem, which feel spongy or hollow when pressed, indicate that the larvae have been feeding inside the plant tissue for some time.

The plant may exhibit signs of stress, such as yellowing or localized browning, which are often mistakenly attributed to improper watering rather than pest activity.

Secondary signs include the appearance of molds or fungi around the entry holes, as the moth larvae facilitate the entry of opportunistic diseases into the plant's interior.

Control measures

Manual removal is effective in the early stages. Carefully cut away the damaged tissue, remove the larvae, and treat the wound with a fungicide to prevent rot.

Systemic insecticides are the preferred chemical method. Since the larvae live inside the plant, contact sprays are ineffective; systemic treatments are absorbed by the plant and kill the pests as they feed.

Implementation of strict quarantine protocols is essential for any new plant introduced to a collection. Observe new arrivals closely for several weeks before moving them near others.

Regular monitoring of plants, especially during the warmer months, is key. Use a magnifying glass to inspect for entry holes or frass deposits in the crevices of the stems.

If a plant is severely infested, it is often best to dispose of it entirely to protect the remaining collection from the spread of larvae and adult moths.
