How to identify

The Annona fruit borer, scientifically known as Anonaepestis bengaliella, is a moth species belonging to the Pyralidae family. Adults are small, characterized by a brownish-grey wing pattern that provides excellent camouflage against tree bark.

The larvae, or caterpillars, are the primary stage causing agricultural damage. They start as pale, tiny organisms but develop a distinct, darker coloration as they grow throughout their developmental instars within the fruit.

The lifecycle of this pest is highly dependent on the phenology of the host plant. They primarily target the flowers and young fruits of the Annona genus, timing their development with the tree’s fruit production cycle.

Female moths lay eggs individually or in small clusters on the surface of young ovaries, near the calyx or along the peduncle. The eggs hatch within a short period, allowing larvae to bore into the fruit tissue immediately.

The cryptic nature of the larvae, combined with their behavior of boring deep inside the fruit, makes them difficult to identify in the early stages of infestation.

What it damages

The Annona fruit borer is a specialized pest that infests various fruits in the Annonaceae family, including cherimoya (Annona cherimola) and sugar apple (Annona squamosa).

The larvae bore into the developing fruit, feeding on the pulp and destroying the seeds. This feeding process results in the arrested development of the fruit, causing it to wither and eventually fall off the tree.

Infestation often introduces secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens through the boreholes. This causes internal rot, rendering the fruit completely unmarketable and inedible for consumers.

In highly infested orchards, the Annona fruit borer can lead to significant economic losses, sometimes destroying the majority of the season's yield if not managed properly.

Beyond direct loss, the physical damage weakens the plant's ability to maintain healthy fruits, as trees often shed affected fruits prematurely in response to the internal infestation.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of frass—caterpillar excrement—mixed with silk strands near the entry holes on the fruit surface. These accumulations are usually visible upon close inspection.

Fruits affected by the borer often show signs of stunted or asymmetric growth. If cut open, the internal flesh will appear brown, mushy, and show clear tunnels made by the feeding larvae.

A sudden, widespread drop of small, immature fruits during the growing season is a clear indicator that the larvae have reached a critical stage within the orchard's canopy.

Dark, sunken patches on the fruit skin, sometimes accompanied by the exudation of gum or sap, indicate that larvae have successfully penetrated the outer layers and are feeding within.

Early monitoring of adult flight patterns near the trees during the flowering phase is essential to detect the arrival of the pest before significant damage occurs.

Control measures

Mechanical control, specifically bagging individual fruits with paper or specialized protective mesh bags, is the most effective way to prevent infestation in small-scale or high-value orchards.

Sanitation plays a crucial role in pest management. All fallen fruits must be collected and disposed of immediately, preferably by burial or burning, to kill the larvae or pupae developing inside.

Pheromone traps are highly effective tools for monitoring the population levels of adult moths and determining the optimal timing for protective interventions.

Chemical control should be applied sparingly and targeted at the egg-laying phase to avoid residues on fruits nearing harvest. Biological control agents, such as parasitic wasps, are being researched for sustainable management.
