The Brown meal moth (Aglossa dimidiata) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. Adult moths typically reach a wingspan of 20 to 30 millimeters.
The moth is characterized by its reddish-brown wings, which often feature distinct, darker wavy lines. The body is covered in dense hairs, giving the insect a somewhat rugged appearance compared to other common pantry moths.
Larvae, or caterpillars, reach lengths of up to 25 mm. They possess a dark, chitinous head and a brownish body, making them easily distinguishable within a grain mass or flour container.
The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. These moths are particularly well-adapted to indoor environments with stable temperatures.
They prefer dark, quiet, and somewhat humid environments, frequently inhabiting grain bins, mills, and warehouses where organic debris accumulates.
What it damages
This species is a significant pest of stored products, primarily affecting cereals, flour, bran, and various dry animal feeds. It is notorious for damaging stored foodstuffs in industrial settings.
The damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which feed on the stored products. They tunnel into kernels and consume fine particles, often leading to heavy losses in stored volume.
A key aspect of their damage is the production of silk webbing, which binds together particles of flour or grain into large, compacted masses. This ruins the texture and quality of the product.
Furthermore, the increased moisture resulting from their metabolic activities and the presence of frass encourages the growth of mold and bacteria in the grain stock.
Warehouses that lack proper hygiene practices or have structural cracks where debris can accumulate are at the highest risk of experiencing severe infestations.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of an infestation is the presence of silk webbing across the surface of grain bags or mixed within the stored grain mass, indicating larval presence.
Adult moths may be observed flying near storage areas during dusk or at night. Their presence is a clear indicator that a reproducing population is already established in the building.
When inspecting grain, one should look for clumped particles that stick together due to larval webs. These clumps are often hollowed out by the feeding activities of the larvae.
A musty or stale odor emanating from a storage bin or warehouse often signals an advanced stage of infestation, reflecting both the consumption of grain and the associated dampness.

Physical control measures, such as deep-cleaning machinery and using temperature management (freezing or heating) for smaller batches, can effectively reduce infestation levels.
For large-scale infestations, professional fumigation using approved chemicals is necessary to eradicate all life stages, including eggs and pupae hidden in deep cracks.
Implementing a monitoring program using pheromone traps is highly recommended to track adult activity and trigger control measures before the population reaches a critical threshold.
