The grease moth (Aglossa cuprealis) is a moth belonging to the family Pyralidae. Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 18 to 30 mm, with forewings that vary from dark brown to a metallic copper sheen, which is the origin of its common name.
The larvae, or caterpillars, can reach up to 25 mm in length. They typically appear dirty white or greyish with a dark head and possess well-developed thoracic legs, allowing them to crawl efficiently through various food substrates.
The lifecycle includes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. In heated environments, this species can complete multiple generations within a single year, posing a high risk for rapid warehouse infestation.
Females lay eggs directly within accumulations of organic debris or inside the stored commodity, preferring areas with high humidity and stagnant air where their offspring can thrive undisturbed.
Pupation takes place inside a tough, silk-lined cocoon constructed from food particles, frass, and silk. This protective structure makes the pupal stage particularly resilient to many physical control measures.
What it damages
The damage is caused primarily by the larval stage, which is a recognized stored-product pest. They feed predominantly on a wide range of plant-based materials kept in storage over long periods.
Commonly attacked commodities include cereal grains, flour, bran, oilseeds, as well as dried fruits and vegetables. The moth is particularly troublesome in storage facilities where moisture levels are not strictly controlled.
Beyond the direct consumption of grain, the larvae contaminate supplies with silk webbing, excrement, and cast skins. This webbing binds grains together into large, solid clumps, rendering the product unmarketable.
The pest often thrives in neglected warehouse structures, utilizing dusty crevices, cracks in floorboards, or accumulations of hay and grain dust as primary breeding grounds.
In some cases, the moths may inhabit rodent or bird nests located in outbuildings, providing a persistent source of infestation that can eventually spill over into stored agricultural products.
Signs of infestation
The primary sign of a grease moth infestation is the observation of adult moths, which are nocturnal and tend to fly near storage areas during the evening and night hours.
Larval activity is evidenced by the presence of fine silk webbing extending through the surface of grain piles or stored flour. Heavy infestations result in the commodity being covered by a thick, matted layer of silk and frass.
The metabolic activity of the larvae within the storage medium causes a localized increase in temperature and moisture, which facilitates the growth of molds and further degrades the quality of the product.
During warehouse inspections, it is essential to check hidden corners, cracks in wooden structures, and areas where debris accumulates, as these are preferred sites for larvae to pupate.
A distinct, musty odor often permeates infested areas, serving as a warning that the moth population has established itself and is actively damaging the grain deep within the stacks.
Control measures
The cornerstone of control is the maintenance of high sanitation standards. Regular cleaning of warehouse spaces to remove dust, spilled grain, and other organic debris is critical to eliminating breeding sites.
Drying grain to a low moisture content before storage is a vital preventive measure, as it prevents larvae from successfully feeding and developing within the stored bulk.
Applying residual insecticides to warehouse surfaces before loading new product can significantly reduce the risk of infestation by contact-killing any emerging moths or surviving larvae.
Preventing entry is essential; warehouses should be sealed, with fine-mesh screens on ventilation ports to exclude moths, and any structural cracks should be promptly repaired.
If an infestation is confirmed, fumigation of the grain or the disposal of heavily infested batches is required, followed by rigorous cleaning and disinfection of the storage area to prevent re-infestation.
