How to identify

The oak knot horn (Acrobasis tumidella) belongs to the Pyralidae family. The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 17–22 mm.

The forewings have a characteristic mottled pattern with grey-brown tones, cross-bands, and dark spots, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark.

In its mature stage, the caterpillar reaches 15–18 mm in length. Its body is dirty green or brownish, with a darker head and a characteristic shiny appearance.

The pupa is dark brown and resides within a dense, silky cocoon attached to the feeding sites or hidden beneath dead bark.

A key biological trait of this species is the construction of protective cases made from silk and frass, which the caterpillars anchor near leaf bases or buds.

What it damages

The primary food source for this pest is the English oak (Quercus robur) and other species within the Quercus genus, often affecting young stands and coppice forests.

Young caterpillars bore into oak buds at the start of the season, consuming the inner tissues, which causes the death of developing shoots and inhibits normal tree growth.

Skeletonized leaves, appearing as a network of veins with missing tissue in between, are a characteristic symptom of feeding activity.
