How to identify

The Northern nut borer (Acrobasis septentrionella) is a moth species belonging to the Pyralidae family. It is a specialized pest known for targeting plants within the Betulaceae family, particularly hazelnut and filbert species.

The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 20 mm. Its forewings are mottled with gray and brown patterns, providing excellent camouflage when resting on the bark of nut trees during the daylight hours.

The larvae progress through several instars. Early-stage larvae are pale, while later instars exhibit a reddish-brown coloration with a darkened head capsule, which helps them blend into their feeding environment.

Overwintering occurs in the larval stage. The insects build small silken cocoons tucked away under leaf scales, near buds, or within narrow crevices in the bark, surviving harsh winter conditions.

In early spring, as temperatures rise, the larvae break dormancy. They consume the surrounding plant tissue before pupating. Shortly after, the adults emerge to begin the reproductive cycle of the season.

What it damages

The primary economic damage is inflicted upon hazelnut and filbert orchards. The larvae act as borers, targeting both reproductive parts and developing vegetative buds of the host plant.

Initial spring damage is focused on swelling buds. By feeding on the internal tissues, the larvae destroy the potential for new leaf and flower development, often causing the shoot to wither.

As the season progresses, the larvae move to the developing nuts. They bore into the hull, consuming the kernel inside. This causes the nuts to stop developing prematurely and eventually drop from the tree.

A single larva can destroy several nuts by moving from one to another. This mobility significantly increases the percentage of fruit loss, which can reach critical levels in unmanaged orchards.

The destruction of buds and young nuts negatively impacts the tree's vigor and long-term yield potential, making the trees more susceptible to further environmental stress.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent spring sign is the presence of dried-out, blackened buds that fail to open while the rest of the canopy shows signs of healthy growth and leaf development.

In mid-summer, a tell-tale sign is the premature drop of young, undersized nuts. These fallen nuts often feature a small, round entrance hole on the shell surface, frequently obscured by a fine layer of silk.

Accumulations of frass (larval excrement) appearing as a fine, brownish dust around the base of the nut or near the entry holes are strong indicators of active infestation.

The presence of fine silken webbing between leaves or around the base of the nuts indicates that larvae have constructed shelters to protect themselves during feeding and development.

Visible wilting or browning of young shoots is another indicator that the larvae have burrowed into the stems to feed, leading to localized plant tissue death.

Control measures

Effective management relies on a combination of chemical and cultural practices. Insecticide applications should be timed to coincide with the period when larvae emerge from their overwintering sites.

Cultural control includes the strict removal and destruction of all fallen nuts. Since the larvae often reside inside the nuts as they drop, preventing them from completing their lifecycle is crucial.

Sanitary pruning of infested branches and twigs during the dormant season helps to eliminate the overwintering population, significantly reducing the pest pressure for the coming spring.

Pheromone traps are highly recommended for monitoring adult flight patterns. This allows farmers to target the most vulnerable stage of the pest with precise spray applications, minimizing chemical use.
