The pecan nut casebearer (Acrobasis nuxvorella) is a significant moth pest within the family Pyralidae. It is a highly specialized insect that targets pecan trees, making it a primary concern for commercial nut growers.
Adult moths are small, with a wingspan ranging from 15 to 20 mm. Their forewings feature a mottled appearance with shades of gray and brown, helping them blend perfectly into the bark of pecan trees.
The larvae progress through several instars. Early-stage larvae are pale green, transitioning to a distinct olive-gray or reddish-brown color as they mature, accompanied by a hardened dark brown head capsule.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The duration of these stages varies significantly depending on ambient temperature and seasonal conditions.
The species overwinters as second-instar larvae in protective cocoons known as hibernacula, typically constructed at the base of buds or in branch crotches.
What it damages
