How to identify
The Walnut shoot moth (Acrobasis kearfotella) belongs to the Pyralidae family. It is a significant pest of nut trees, primarily affecting pecans and walnuts throughout their growing season.
Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 15–20 mm. Their forewings feature greyish-brown patterns, which provide excellent camouflage against the bark of host trees during the day.
The larval stage is the most destructive phase. The caterpillars reach a length of 12–15 mm and are identifiable by their dark heads and greenish-brown bodies that blend into the foliage.
The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Pupation often occurs within the hollowed-out shoots or inside protective silk cocoons crafted amidst damaged fruit and webbing.
Its life cycle is perfectly synchronized with the nut tree phenology, allowing the larvae to exploit the most nutrient-rich parts of the tree, such as developing buds and young fruit.
What it damages
The Walnut shoot moth primarily damages developing buds, young shoots, and immature fruit. This pest activity can drastically reduce yield quality and overall tree productivity.
Larvae bore into the young nuts, consuming the developing kernel, which causes the fruit to shrivel, darken, and drop prematurely. This leads to substantial harvest losses.
By boring into young shoots, the larvae cause the tips of branches to wither and die back. This behavior, often called "flagging," disrupts the structure of the canopy and stunts growth.
Severe infestations can destroy up to 50% of the annual yield, leaving behind webbing and frass that make the remaining nuts unmarketable and prone to secondary infections.

When it appears
Activity begins in early spring as temperatures rise, signaling the emergence of overwintering larvae from their dormancy sites under the bark or in plant debris.
The first generation of moths typically emerges during the blossom period. This is a critical time for monitoring, as the larvae target the vulnerable young fruit set.
The pest often completes multiple generations per year. The flight period is prolonged, necessitating consistent monitoring from mid-spring through late summer to detect new activity.
As autumn arrives, the final generation of larvae seeks protected sites to hibernate. They enter diapause until the following spring, ensuring the survival of the population.
Weather patterns significantly influence population dynamics, with warm and humid spring weather often leading to more rapid development and increased infestation levels.
Signs of infestation
One of the earliest signs of infestation is the presence of silk webbing around the buds or young fruit. The webbing frequently traps frass, making it easier to spot.
Premature fruit drop and the presence of darkened, withered fruit on the tree are strong indicators. Dissecting these nuts usually reveals tunnels or a feeding larva.
Terminal "flagging"—where the tips of new growth turn brown and droop—is a clear symptom of larvae boring into the shoot. Small entry holes with sawdust-like frass are often visible nearby.
Visible damage to the shell surface of developing nuts is common. These sites often become entry points for fungi, leading to rot that affects the nut's internal quality.
Using pheromone traps during the evening is the most effective way to detect the start of adult moth flights, allowing for targeted intervention before eggs hatch.
Control measures
Sanitation is key; pruning and destroying infested twigs and fallen fruit removes the habitat for larvae and reduces the local population density significantly.
Biological control, particularly the use of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, is effective against young larvae while remaining environmentally friendly and safe for beneficial insects.
Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the period of peak egg hatch. Systemic insecticides are sometimes used, provided that pre-harvest intervals are strictly observed.
Pheromone-based monitoring and mass trapping programs can help maintain lower population levels, reducing the need for broad-spectrum insecticide applications in the orchard.
