How to identify

The adult moth is a small insect with a wingspan of 12–16 mm. Its forewings exhibit a mottled grey-brown pattern, which provides excellent camouflage against the bark of fir trees.

The larva is the most recognizable stage, characterized by a distinct reddish-brown head. Its body is typically yellowish-green, reaching a length of about 10–12 mm when fully developed.

This pest belongs to the Tortricidae family of the order Lepidoptera. Its life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.

The species overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited on the bark of young twigs. These eggs are incredibly small, flattened, and colored to match the substrate, making them very hard to detect.

Pupation occurs within loose silken cocoons constructed by the larvae among the needles. This stage typically takes place in late June, preparing the insect for its adult emergence.

What it damages

The primary host for this pest is the silver fir (Abies alba). During outbreaks, the species can significantly impact fir populations in both managed forests and decorative plantations.

Larvae primarily attack developing buds in the spring. They bore into the buds, consuming the internal tissues, which causes the failure of new shoot development and branch deformation.

After destroying the buds, the larvae shift their feeding to the new needles of the current year. They chew through the needle bases, leading to needle drop and drying of the foliage.

High infestation levels weaken the trees significantly, making them susceptible to secondary pests such as bark beetles and wood-boring insects, which can be fatal to the tree.

The visual impact of the damage includes a reddish hue to the crown and sparse foliage. This loss of annual growth reduces both the health and aesthetic value of the trees.

When it appears

Adult moths emerge and fly from late June to late July. During this period, mating occurs, and females lay eggs on the bark of the host trees.

The eggs undergo embryonic development during the autumn and overwinter on the twigs. Larval emergence coincides with the bud-burst period of the fir trees in spring.

The period of active larval feeding occurs throughout May and June, which is the most critical time for monitoring and intervention to prevent damage.

The larvae complete their development by late June, after which they pupate. The entire life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the host fir tree.

Pheromone traps are used by foresters and horticulturists starting in June to track the population density and determine the optimal timing for control measures.

Signs of infestation

A primary sign of infestation is the presence of resin droplets on the buds in spring. This is caused by the larvae damaging the bud scales while trying to enter.

Fine silk webbing, which pulls needles into clusters, is a clear indicator of larval activity. This webbing serves as a protective structure for the larvae.

The premature drop of needles and bud scales under the tree canopy in June indicates that the larvae are actively feeding in the upper parts of the crown.

Small dark frass pellets are often found trapped within the silk webs or scattered on the branches, providing evidence of feeding activity.

Malformed or stunted growth of new shoots is a telltale sign that buds were attacked during the early stages of development.

Control measures

Biological control using formulations based on Bacillus thuringiensis is highly effective against young larvae and minimizes environmental impact.

Chemical control involving systemic or contact-stomach insecticides is recommended for nurseries. Treatment should be applied precisely at the time of bud burst.
