Telenomus rowani

Telenomus rowani

Description

How to identify

Telenomus rowani is a minute parasitic wasp belonging to the family Platygastridae. These tiny insects are highly specialized parasitoids that target the eggs of various lepidopteran pests, most notably those affecting rice crops.

Physically, they are identified by their small, dark-colored bodies and specialized antennae which are used to detect the chemical signals of their hosts. Due to their microscopic size, identification in the field is usually performed by entomologists observing the characteristic impact on the host's egg masses.

What it damages

This species primarily attacks the yellow rice stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas). By laying its own eggs inside the eggs of the borer, it effectively kills the embryo of the pest, preventing it from reaching the larval stage and damaging the crop stems.

In modern integrated pest management (IPM), Telenomus rowani is considered an essential beneficial insect rather than a pest. Its presence significantly reduces the economic threshold of damage caused by the stem borer in rice-growing regions.

When it appears

The life cycle of Telenomus rowani is strictly synchronized with the egg-laying periods of its host. Activity peaks during the vegetative stages of rice growth when stem borers are most active in depositing eggs on the leaf surfaces.

Depending on ambient temperature and humidity, the wasp can complete several generations within a single season. The duration of the life cycle from egg to adult is short, allowing for rapid population growth when host availability is high.

Signs of infestation

The most visible sign of Telenomus rowani activity is the discoloration of the borer's egg masses. Instead of the healthy pale or yellow color, parasitized eggs turn dark grey or black as the wasp larvae develop inside.

Under magnification, one can observe small exit holes in the egg chorion, indicating that the adult wasps have emerged. A high percentage of darkened eggs within a field indicates successful biological suppression of the pest population.

Control measures

To preserve Telenomus rowani, farmers should avoid the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum insecticides. Implementing selective chemical applications is crucial to minimize mortality rates among these beneficial egg parasitoids.

Cultural practices, such as the maintenance of field borders and the careful management of crop residues, help provide refugia for the wasps. Promoting natural biological control agents is a cornerstone of sustainable rice production and long-term pest management strategies.
