The pointed click beetle (Selatosomus puncticollis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. Adult beetles are typically 10–14 mm long, with a dark, bronze, or black-brown body featuring distinct punctation on the elytra.

The larvae, commonly known as wireworms, possess a dense, cylindrical body that is yellowish-brown in color, protected by a hard, chitinous exoskeleton which provides high resilience against environmental stressors.

A distinctive behavioral trait of these beetles is their ability to flip themselves into the air with an audible "click" sound if placed on their backs, a trait that serves as a primary field identification marker.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis and spans from 3 to 5 years. Most of this period is spent in the soil as a larva, which is the stage responsible for the most significant agricultural damage.

When it appears

Adult beetles emerge in early spring, usually during May, as the soil warms up to sufficient temperatures to trigger their emergence and subsequent flight activity.

Oviposition occurs in the upper soil layers, typically in areas near the roots of grasses or weeds, ensuring that newly hatched larvae have immediate access to food.

Young larvae initially feed on decaying organic matter but transition to living plant tissue as they grow and progress through their successive developmental stages.
