How to identify
The European pine shoot moth, Rhyacionia bushnelli, is a moth species belonging to the Tortricidae family. It is a notorious pest affecting young pine plantations and nurseries.
Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 15 to 20 mm. Their forewings are distinctively patterned with reddish-brown and silver-gray markings, providing excellent camouflage against pine needles and bark.
The larvae, which cause the primary damage, grow to about 12–15 mm in length. They have a brown body with a dark, sclerotized head, making them easily identifiable upon close inspection of infested shoots.
Eggs are tiny, oval, and translucent, usually laid singly or in small groups on the needles or the base of buds. Because of their size, they are often overlooked during routine field monitoring.
The pupal stage occurs either inside the hollowed-out shoots or in the soil debris. The pupae are active and capable of moving, which helps them emerge before the moth’s flight period.
What it damages
This pest exclusively targets young pine trees. While it prefers Scots pine, it can infest various other pine species in plantations, urban landscapes, and nursery settings.
Damage is inflicted by the larvae, which bore into the developing terminal buds and young shoots. This feeding habit destroys the growing tissue and disrupts the tree's apical dominance.
The immediate result of the infestation is the death of the terminal shoot, which causes the stem to develop permanent deformities, such as a "crook" or "post-horn" shape.
Stunted growth and distorted stems significantly reduce the aesthetic and commercial value of the timber, often rendering young trees useless for forestry production.
Repeated attacks weaken the tree's health, making it highly susceptible to subsequent colonization by secondary pests like bark beetles, which can eventually kill the entire plant.
When it appears
Adult moths typically emerge and begin their flight period in late spring to early summer, depending on local temperatures and environmental conditions.
The mating and egg-laying process usually takes place in June. This coincides with the availability of succulent, fast-growing pine shoots that provide the necessary nutrients for the larvae.
Upon hatching, larvae initially feed on needles before mining into the base of the buds or the centers of the shoots, where they spend the remainder of the growing season.
They overwinter as larvae inside the infested shoots. As the temperatures rise in early spring, they resume feeding briefly before pupating in late spring.
The entire life cycle is tightly synced with the growth phases of the pine, ensuring that the most vulnerable stage of the plant coincides with the larval feeding requirements.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of an infestation is the browning or "flagging" of the terminal needles and shoots during the summer months, signaling that the inner tissue has been destroyed.
Look for resinous globs or "tents" on the surface of the shoots; these are created by the larvae as they seal the entrance to their feeding galleries to protect themselves from predators.
Small piles of reddish-brown frass (larval excrement) near the entry points indicate that the larvae are currently active and feeding inside the stem tissue.
Twisted or deformed stems, often referred to as "crook" deformity, are classic indicators of past infestations that resulted in the loss of the original leader bud.

Cultural practices are vital in nurseries, including the physical removal and destruction of infested shoots before the larvae mature or exit the branches for pupation.
Biological control agents, such as specific parasitic wasps or Bacillus thuringiensis, have shown efficacy in reducing pest populations while minimizing chemical impact on the ecosystem.
Maintaining proper distance between young plantations and established, infested stands can help prevent the spread of the moth, as adults are weak fliers and rely on wind or proximity for dispersal.
