The Adana pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia adana) is a member of the Tortricidae family. This small moth, with a wingspan of approximately 12–15 mm, is a significant pest of pine species in both forest nurseries and plantations.
The larvae progress through several instars, varying in color from creamy yellow to reddish-brown with a dark head capsule. Their small size and internal feeding habits make them elusive to most visual inspections.
Pupation typically occurs inside the damaged pine buds or shoots. The pupae are brown and well-protected by the plant tissues, which serves as a defensive mechanism against external threats.
The life cycle is generally univoltine, meaning one generation per year, though climate conditions can influence the timing of emergence and development across different geographic zones.
Monitoring for adults is best performed using pheromone-baited traps during the spring mating flight, providing forest managers with crucial data for timing intervention strategies.
What it damages
This pest primarily infests various species of pine, including Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra. Young trees, typically between 2 and 10 years of age, are the most susceptible to infestation.
Larvae bore into the terminal and lateral buds, feeding on the growing tissue. This destruction causes the leader shoot to die, forcing the tree to develop multiple leaders and resulting in crooked stems.

When it appears
