Adult beetles are typically small, often featuring a metallic luster on their elytra, ranging from blue and green to bronze. A defining feature of these insects is their enlarged hind femora, which allow them to jump powerfully when threatened.

The larvae possess an elongated body, usually yellowish-brown with dark spots, and possess chewing mouthparts. They typically feed openly on the surface of leaves or occasionally mine through leaf tissues.

The adults are highly mobile and can quickly colonize crop fields, which poses significant challenges for monitoring and effective population management.

These pests overwinter primarily as adults, hiding in plant debris, topsoil layers, or forest litter located near agricultural lands.

What it damages

The primary hosts of plantain flea beetles are members of the Plantaginaceae family, though many species in this group also infest weeds and certain cultivated crops.

Damage is caused by both adults and larvae that consume vegetative plant organs. They scrape the epidermis or chew through holes in the leaf blades.

Signs of infestation

Damaged areas on the leaves eventually desiccate and turn brown, leading to a ragged appearance and promoting premature leaf drop in severe cases.

A visual inspection of the underside of leaves or terminal buds usually reveals the presence of beetles, which will jump instantly upon disturbance.

Larvae leave behind skeletonized leaf areas, where only the major veins remain intact, serving as a specific diagnostic indicator of larval activity.

The presence of dark excrement spots on the leaf surfaces near feeding sites provides further evidence of active pest colonization.
