The brown wheat mite Petrobia californica belongs to the Tetranychidae family, order Trombidiformes. These mites are characterized by a reddish-brown body color, a globular shape, and notably longer front legs compared to other spider mite species.
Adult mites are microscopic but visible with a magnifying lens. Unlike many other spider mites, they do not produce significant webbing, making early detection a primary challenge for farm managers and agronomists.
The life cycle includes eggs, larvae, protonymphs, and deutonymphs. The duration of each stage is heavily influenced by environmental temperature and moisture, with rapid development occurring during warm, dry weather conditions.
Females lay eggs directly on the foliage or leaf axils. The eggs are spherical and start as bright red, often becoming lighter as the hatching process approaches, which can be observed with specialized equipment.
