The primary sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the wood, which are created when the adults emerge.

The presence of fine wood dust or frass near these holes is a clear indicator that larvae are actively feeding inside the structural material.

During warmer months, adult beetles may be spotted on the surface of infested timber as they emerge to find mates or new suitable sites for oviposition.

Extensive galleries formed inside the wood reduce its structural integrity, often resulting in a hollow sound when the affected material is tapped.

Infested sections may become soft or crumbly to the touch, especially in areas where beetle activity coincides with moisture-related fungal infections.

Control measures

The most effective method of prevention is managing moisture levels in indoor environments, as dry wood is generally unsuitable for the larvae to survive.

Regular inspections of wooden structures, especially in basements, warehouses, and storage areas, are essential to detect infestations in their early stages.

If an active infestation is identified, the affected wood should be promptly removed and disposed of to prevent the pest from spreading to other areas.

For more severe cases, professional insecticide treatments that penetrate deeply into the wood can be used to eradicate both larvae and adult beetles.
