How to identify

The acorn moth (Pammene fasciana) is a moth of the family Tortricidae. It is a small insect widely distributed throughout Europe and parts of Asia, closely associated with oak habitats.

The adult moth has a wingspan of 13–18 mm. Its forewings are mottled with a brown and white pattern, allowing it to camouflage perfectly against the rough bark of oak trees.

The larvae are typical tortricid caterpillars, reaching up to 15 mm in length. Their bodies are usually pinkish or reddish with a dark, polished brown head capsule.

The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They typically spend the winter in the larval stage, protected in a silk cocoon.

As a specialized pest, it is specifically adapted to exploit the nutrient-rich seeds of the genus Quercus, causing significant problems in forest regeneration.

What it damages

The primary hosts of the acorn moth are oak trees, but larvae can occasionally be found in the seeds of beech (Fagus) and sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa).

The damage is caused exclusively by the larvae, which bore into the developing acorn and consume the endosperm and embryo, rendering the seed inviable.

Severe infestations can destroy the vast majority of an acorn crop, leading to catastrophic failures in the natural regeneration of oak woodlands.

Damaged acorns are highly susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which quickly cause the seed to rot and turn unsuitable for any purpose.

When it appears

Adult moths emerge in late spring, typically coinciding with the flowering of oak trees between May and June, which is the time of early acorn development.

Females deposit eggs individually on the surface of young acorns. After an incubation period of about two weeks, the larvae hatch and immediately bore into the fruit.

The larval stage lasts approximately one month. During this time, the caterpillar tunnels through the acorn, leaving behind a trail of frass and debris.

By late summer or early autumn, the mature larvae exit the acorns, descend to the ground, and burrow into the soil or leaf litter to prepare for winter.

The pupal stage occurs in the spring of the following year within a resilient silk cocoon, completing the annual lifecycle of this harmful moth.

Signs of infestation

A small entry hole on the acorn surface, often partially covered by fine brownish dust or frass, is the most common external sign of infestation.

The presence of light silk webbing near the entry point suggests that the larva is actively feeding and reinforcing the tunnel against potential predators.

Prematurely dropped, green, or discolored acorns often indicate that an internal infestation has occurred, forcing the tree to abort the damaged fruit.

When an infested acorn is cracked open, the inside is typically filled with caterpillar excrement, silk, and fragments of the partially consumed seed.

Heavy infestation may result in visible deformity of the acorn shell, such as dark spots or irregular bumps appearing around the entry area.

Control measures

The primary control measure is the prompt collection and destruction of fallen acorns to prevent the larvae from migrating into the soil for overwintering.

In nurseries, targeted application of contact or systemic insecticides during the peak of adult flight and egg-laying can provide significant population reduction.

Pheromone traps are essential for monitoring population levels and timing the application of control agents to maximize effectiveness while minimizing costs.

Encouraging natural biological controls, such as hymenopteran parasitoids that predate on the larvae, is a sustainable method for long-term population management.

Deep cultivation of the soil in forest nurseries during late autumn destroys pupation sites, significantly increasing mortality rates of the overwintering larvae.
