Orthotomicus angulatus is a species of bark beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are small, typically measuring between 2.5 and 3.5 millimeters in length.
The body of the beetle is cylindrical in shape, which is standard for most bark beetles, and typically exhibits a dark brown to black coloration. This shape allows them to navigate easily within the bark layers of trees.
A primary diagnostic feature of Orthotomicus angulatus is the structure of the elytral declivity. Males possess distinct teeth along the edges of this declivity, giving the posterior part of the body an angular appearance.
The larvae are legless and white in color with a yellowish-brown head. They develop underneath the bark, excavating larval tunnels that branch out from the main maternal gallery as they mature.
Pupae are white and soft-bodied, developing within individual cells, often referred to as pupal chambers, which the larvae prepare in the inner bark or the outer sapwood before final transformation.
What it damages
The primary hosts of Orthotomicus angulatus are coniferous trees, with a strong preference for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). They tend to attack trees that are already stressed, weakened, or recently felled.
Besides pine, this beetle can also damage spruce and other conifers within its geographical range. Both adults and larvae contribute to the damage by disrupting the conductive tissues of the tree.
As the beetles and larvae feed on the cambium and phloem, they effectively girdle the tree. This cuts off the nutrient flow, leading to the gradual decline and eventual death of the tree.
Mass attacks by these beetles can kill healthy-looking trees very quickly. Furthermore, they are known vectors for various wood-staining and pathogenic fungi that cause rot and decrease the quality of timber.
Severe infestations create large-scale damage in forest stands, turning weakened trees into nurseries for the next generation of pests, thus facilitating the spread of the beetle throughout the area.
When it appears
The flight period for Orthotomicus angulatus generally begins in spring, typically in April or May, when temperatures become high enough to sustain their activity and colonization of new trees.

Adult beetles overwinter in various locations, including the bark of infested trees, forest litter, or the soil near the base of the tree, where they are protected from extreme freezing temperatures.
Activity resumes early in the spring as soon as the bark temperature rises sufficiently, allowing the adults to emerge and begin the cycle of finding new host material.
Signs of infestation
One of the earliest signs of infestation is the presence of boring dust, a fine sawdust-like material created by the beetles as they chew through the bark and settle in the tree.
Small entry holes may be visible on the surface of the bark. In some cases, conifers will exude resin, forming sticky "resin funnels" at the point of entry as a defense mechanism against the beetle.
A change in foliage color is a key indicator of severe infestation. The needles may turn light green, then yellow, and finally reddish-brown as the tree loses its ability to transport water and nutrients.
Loose or peeling bark on the trunk is a strong sign of advanced infestation. Beneath the bark, complex patterns of maternal and larval tunnels are usually visible, confirming the activity of the pest.
Numerous small, circular exit holes in the bark indicate that the new generation of adult beetles has already emerged, suggesting the tree is no longer able to survive.
Control measures
The primary method of managing Orthotomicus angulatus is the prompt identification and sanitary removal of infested trees before the new generation of beetles can complete their development.
Sanitation cuttings should be carried out systematically, ensuring that all logs and infested materials are removed or properly treated to prevent the spread of the population to neighboring healthy trees.
Maintaining high forest hygiene, including the removal of logging debris and wind-fallen wood, is essential to deprive the beetles of suitable breeding grounds in the forest.
Pheromone traps are used as a monitoring tool to determine population density and to assist in timing control efforts, helping to reduce the overall number of beetles in a specific area.
Long-term prevention focuses on silvicultural practices that promote tree health and stand vigor, making the forest more resilient to secondary pests like bark beetles.
