The Bihar spider mite (Oligonychus biharensis) belongs to the family Tetranychidae. It is a highly resilient and prolific pest that thrives in warm and dry climates, often leading to rapid population explosions.
These mites are extremely small and difficult to see with the naked eye. Adults are typically oval-shaped and range in color from pale yellow to reddish-brown, depending on their diet and stage of life.
The biological cycle consists of an egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stage. Under optimal conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in a matter of days, allowing for multiple generations per season.
The pest survives unfavorable conditions by seeking shelter in leaf litter, bark crevices, or protected areas of the host plant. They are known for spinning fine silk webs that protect their colonies.
