How to identify
The Reticulated tortrix (Lozotaenia retiana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the Tortricidae family. It is a common moth species known for causing damage to woody perennial plants.
Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 18–22 mm. Their forewings feature a distinctive reticulated or marble-like pattern in shades of brown and ochre, providing camouflage.
Larvae (caterpillars) transition through several instars, starting as light green and turning olive-colored as they mature. They are characterized by a darker head capsule.
Pupae are deep brown in color. They are typically found inside silken cocoons spun between leaves, which are folded or rolled together by the larvae to create a shelter.
Eggs are deposited in small, overlapping clusters known as egg masses. These are covered with a protective secretion that hardens, protecting the eggs from environmental stress and predators.
What it damages
This pest is a polyphage, primarily attacking fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and apricot. It can also infest various berry-producing shrubs in mixed garden systems.
Caterpillars cause direct injury by feeding on buds, leaves, and developing fruit. This feeding behavior often destroys the reproductive potential of the affected branches.

The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of rolled or folded leaves held together by fine silken threads, forming protective nests.
Spring feeding is characterized by skeletonized buds and small, irregular holes in the young leaves, often leading to stunted growth of new shoots.

Fruit damage manifests as surface abrasions and deep pits, often followed by secondary infections such as rot that can spread to healthy neighboring fruits.

Chemical control involving systemic or contact insecticides should be applied during critical windows, such as the pre-bloom or post-bloom stages, following local regulations.
Maintaining orchard health through proper pruning and nutrition ensures trees are more resilient to the stress caused by minor leafroller populations.
