The grain thrips (Limothrips angulicornis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. The adult insects are small, slender, and range in color from dark brown to black, typically measuring about 1.2 to 1.5 mm in length.
A distinctive feature of this species is the structure of the antennae, where females exhibit specific angular projections on the segments. They possess narrow wings fringed with long hairs, which allows them to drift and move between plants.
The larvae are generally yellowish or orange, wingless, and resemble the adults in body shape but are smaller. The lifecycle consists of eggs, larvae, propupa, pupa, and adult stages.
Only fertilized females survive the winter. They hibernate in plant debris, under tree bark, or within dense tufts of perennial grasses, emerging in spring when temperatures consistently rise above 10°C.
The rate of development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly temperature and humidity. In warm, dry summers, multiple generations can occur, leading to rapid population growth within cereal fields.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It also thrives on several wild grass species, which serve as natural hosts throughout the season.
Both adults and larvae pierce the plant tissue and suck out the sap. They target the leaves, stems, and developing ears, causing metabolic stress and reducing the overall vigor of the host plant.
Damage to the flag leaf is particularly detrimental as it inhibits photosynthesis, directly impacting grain filling. This stress makes the plants more susceptible to secondary fungal infections and drought conditions.
When the thrips feed on the developing kernels during the milk stage, it results in shriveled, thin grain. This causes a significant decrease in the thousand-kernel weight and reduces the quality of the harvested crop.
Economic damage is most severe when infestations occur during the heading phase. Heavy populations can lead to widespread yield losses, significantly affecting the profitability of cereal production.
Signs of infestation
Early signs of an infestation include the appearance of silvery or white streaks on leaves and ear glumes. This discoloration is caused by the empty cells left behind after the sap is extracted by the thrips.
Upon closer inspection of the ears, growers may find clusters of larvae accompanied by dark, spot-like excrement. These deposits are a clear indicator of a persistent pest presence that can contaminate the harvest.
Affected ears often appear bleached, deformed, or brittle. In severe cases, the entire ear might dry out prematurely, creating a patchy appearance across the field.
Adult thrips are active on warm days and can be observed crawling on the plants. If a field is shaken or disturbed, the insects are easily startled and may take flight or drop to lower sections of the plant.

Control measures

Chemical control is advised when population levels exceed the economic injury threshold, typically during the stem elongation or heading stages. Using systemic insecticides ensures that the pesticide reaches the insects hiding within the glumes.
It is important to rotate chemical classes to prevent the development of insecticide resistance, as thrips are known to adapt quickly to frequently used products.
Regular field monitoring using yellow sticky traps is a useful tool for tracking population trends. This allows farmers to time their insecticide applications effectively to maximize efficacy while protecting beneficial insects.
