The family Trachelipodidae belongs to the suborder Oniscidea, commonly known as woodlice, within the order Isopoda. Unlike most crustaceans, these organisms have successfully colonized terrestrial environments, though they remain dependent on high humidity and dark, sheltered locations, which are typically found in gardens, compost heaps, and greenhouses.

These pests primarily target crops that thrive in damp conditions, including various vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, as well as strawberries and root vegetables. Seedlings and young plants are particularly vulnerable, as they can be decimated during the nocturnal feeding activities of the woodlice.

The biology of Trachelipodidae is defined by a reliance on moisture. They breathe via pseudotracheae, which require a certain level of humidity to function effectively. The females carry eggs in a ventral brood pouch called a marsupium. After hatching, the juveniles undergo several molts before reaching maturity, spending their lives hidden under debris, organic matter, or within the upper layers of damp soil.

The damage caused by these pests includes irregular holes in foliage, stems, and fruits lying near or on the ground. Beyond physical consumption, woodlice often facilitate the entry of pathogens into plant tissues. Their presence in high densities can severely impact plant development and lead to significant post-harvest losses, especially in greenhouse environments.
