The Teredinidae family, commonly known as shipworms, comprises marine bivalve mollusks that have evolved to bore into wooden structures submerged in saltwater. Taxonomically, they are classified within the order Myida. These organisms are notorious for their capacity to devastate submerged wooden assets, from historical sailing ships to modern maritime infrastructure.

The biological cycle of Teredinidae begins with a microscopic planktonic larva that settles on wood surfaces. The adult uses its highly modified, file-like shells to scrape away wood fibers, creating an elaborate tunnel system. These tunnels follow the grain of the wood, and the animal maintains contact with the external environment only through a tiny siphon at the point of entry.
The damage caused by these pests is notoriously invisible until a structural collapse occurs. Because they eat the interior of the wood while leaving the exterior surface relatively intact, the structural integrity of piles, piers, and vessels is compromised from within. This hidden infestation makes them exceptionally difficult to detect without specialized equipment.
