By boring into these stems, the wasps create galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the plant. This mechanical damage prevents the normal transport of water and nutrients, leading to the wilting and death of the stems above the entry point.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female wasp selects a suitable stem, excavates a chamber, and typically stocks it with paralyzed prey for her offspring. The larvae develop inside the stem, feeding on the provided food source until they pupate, often overwintering within the hollowed-out plant tissue.

The damage is characterized by wilting, stunted growth, and visible boreholes in the stems. Beyond the direct physical damage, these holes act as entry points for various pathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which can cause internal decay and significantly weaken the plant's defense mechanisms against other environmental stressors.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular field inspections and the prompt removal and destruction of infested stems are crucial to break the life cycle. For severe infestations, applying appropriate systemic insecticides during the peak activity period can help reduce wasp populations and prevent further damage to high-value crops.
