Nebaliids

Systematic position. Nebaliids (Latin: Nebaliidae) are a family of higher crustaceans belonging to the order Leptostraca. These are primarily marine organisms inhabiting coastal zones, typically found in silt or sandy substrates. While not considered traditional terrestrial pests, their presence in coastal irrigation systems or in operations utilizing raw seawater/estuarine water can pose significant challenges for controlled environment agriculture.

Affected crops. These crustaceans can cause damage in hydroponic systems that utilize untreated seawater or brackish water from estuaries, as well as in the cultivation of halophytic crops. They target young seedlings, tender root systems, and succulent tissues that come into direct contact with substrates or water sources inhabited by these crustacean colonies.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of nebaliids includes a larval stage that develops within the female's brood pouch. Upon release into the environment, they adopt a benthic lifestyle, feeding on detritus and organic debris. Their ability to reproduce rapidly in the presence of sufficient organic matter allows populations to quickly overwhelm limited water volumes, creating management issues in closed-loop systems.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The primary economic harm results from mechanical damage to plant root systems and emerging shoots.

  • Feeding on the epidermis of roots.
  • Destruction of young seedlings in hydroponic trays.
  • Contamination of nutrient solutions with waste products.
  • Increased susceptibility of plants to secondary infections at the feeding sites.

Control measures. Protection strategies are heavily centered on water filtration and pre-treatment protocols. It is essential to implement fine filtration and water purification systems in hydroponic facilities to prevent the entry of juvenile or adult nebaliids. Chemical treatments are rarely used due to plant sensitivity; emphasis is placed on mechanical filtration, UV sterilization of water, or adjusting salinity levels to levels hostile to crustacean development.
