Systematic position. The family Derocheilocarididae belongs to the subclass Malacostraca, order Mystacocaridida. These organisms are highly specialized interstitial crustaceans primarily found in the interstitial spaces of sandy marine beaches, rather than being classified as traditional agricultural pests.

Derocheilocaridids

Biology and lifecycle. Derocheilocaridids are characterized by their elongated bodies adapted for movement through narrow spaces between sand grains. Their lifecycle is intrinsically linked to marine environmental factors such as tidal moisture, salinity gradients, and temperature. They are microphagous, feeding on small organic debris found within the sandy substrate.

Nature of damage. They do not pose a direct threat to field crops or horticultural plants, as their biological niche is strictly limited to marine coastal zones. The primary concern in an agricultural context arises only when marine sand is improperly used as a component in greenhouse soil mixtures without prior treatment.

Agronomic implications. If introduced into a greenhouse environment, these crustaceans can alter the physical and chemical properties of the soil. The main issue is not direct plant damage, but the potential increase in salinity or disruption of the soil aeration structure, which can negatively affect sensitive greenhouse crops.

Protection and control measures. As they are not agricultural pests, no specific chemical control or pesticide application is necessary. Agronomists should focus on standard soil preparation protocols to maintain high substrate quality:

  • Ensure all potting media undergo proper steam sterilization.
  • Use only washed river sand instead of raw beach sand.
  • Monitor pH and electrical conductivity (EC) levels regularly.
  • Source commercial, certified soil substrates for greenhouse production.
