The biology of rollers is characterized by their preference for open savanna-like habitats or agricultural mosaics where they can perch on fences, power lines, or lone trees. They serve as opportunistic hunters, targeting large invertebrates such as locusts, beetles, and crickets, which are often significant threats to grain and vegetable production.

Their cycle of development is highly dependent on nesting sites, often utilizing tree cavities or abandoned burrows. During the breeding season, their activity levels increase, and their demand for food peaks, which inadvertently benefits the farmer by providing natural control of pest populations.

The potential damage to crops is minimal and mostly accidental, occurring when birds land on delicate stalks or damage fruits while foraging for insects on the ground. They do not feed on crops in the manner of primary avian pests like sparrows or crows, and their "pest" status is generally considered an agricultural misconception.

In cases where their presence causes local damage, non-lethal management strategies are recommended. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices suggest focusing on:
