Gnathotrupes longipennis is a small species of beetle belonging to the Scolytinae subfamily, commonly known as ambrosia beetles. These insects are recognized by their elongated bodies and specific morphological adaptations for life within wood tunnels.

The adults are typically dark brown to black, allowing them to blend into the bark of their host trees. They possess long elytra (wing covers), which is the defining physical feature that distinguishes this species within its taxonomic group.

The lifecycle consists of four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Throughout these stages, the beetles remain hidden inside the timber, often residing in galleries carved into the sapwood and heartwood of the host plant.

These beetles are unique in their symbiotic relationship with fungi. They cultivate these fungi within their galleries, which serve as the primary food source for their larvae. This behavior is a key aspect of their biological strategy.

Because they spend most of their life cycle inside the wood, they are highly protected from environmental extremes and many natural predators. This makes them a difficult target for conventional external pesticide treatments.

The most visible sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular entry holes on the tree trunk. These are often accompanied by "frass" (fine sawdust-like debris) deposited at the entrance or in bark crevices.

In many cases, resin flow may be observed around the entry points as the tree attempts to push out the invaders. However, this is only successful in relatively healthy trees with sufficient sap production.

Internal damage manifests as complex, branched tunnel systems within the wood. These galleries often show dark discoloration due to the fungal growth associated with the beetles' presence.

Tree canopy symptoms such as sudden yellowing, wilting, or branch dieback indicate that the beetle galleries have interfered with the water and nutrient transport systems of the tree.

Increased bird activity, particularly by woodpeckers searching for larvae inside the tree, is a strong indicator of a heavy infestation within the trunk or branches.

Control measures
