Platen's thrips (Frankliniella platensis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. It is a tiny insect with an elongated body, typically measuring about 1.5–2 mm in length.

The adult coloration ranges from light yellow to brown, making them difficult to spot on leaf surfaces. Their wings are narrow and adorned with a characteristic fringe of long hairs, which is the signature feature of this order.

Larvae appear similar to adults but are smaller, wingless, and lighter in color. They are highly active and often seek refuge in hidden plant parts, such as flower buds or leaf axils.

Field identification is difficult due to the morphological similarity with other species of the Frankliniella genus. Laboratory microscopic analysis is usually required for definitive species determination.

These insects undergo a complete metamorphosis: egg, two larval stages, propupa, pupa, and adult. Some stages often occur in the soil, which complicates population monitoring and control timing.

Initial signs of infestation appear as small, light-colored or silvery patches on leaf blades, which eventually merge into larger discolored areas often followed by tissue necrosis.

A closer inspection of the leaf underside often reveals small black dots, which are the fecal deposits of the insect and a characteristic indicator of thrips presence.

Damaged tissues dry out quickly, leading to premature leaf drop. Flower buds may show puncture marks, causing blooms to open with visible damage or fail to open completely.

In cases of heavy infestation, a sticky substance may appear on the foliage, promoting the growth of sooty mold, which further suppresses the physiological processes of the plant.

Stunted growth, stem twisting, and atypical yellowing of leaf edges are critical signs that indicate a need to inspect the field or greenhouse for this pest immediately.

Control measures

Controlling Platen's thrips requires an integrated approach that combines cultural, biological, and chemical methods to ensure effective plant protection in greenhouses.

Regular monitoring using blue sticky traps is essential, as these traps effectively attract thrips and allow for early detection of population surges before they become unmanageable.

Biological control methods involve the release of natural predators, such as predatory mites (Amblyseius spp.) or Orius bugs, which are highly effective at suppressing thrips populations.

Chemical control strategies should prioritize the use of systemic insecticides, while strictly rotating chemical classes to prevent the development of resistance in pest populations.
