How to identify

The Panamanian flower thrips (Frankliniella panamensis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These are minute insects, usually measuring between 1.5 and 2 millimeters in length.

Adult individuals possess a slender, elongated body, typically ranging from yellowish to brown in color. Accurate field identification is difficult due to their small size and similarity to other thrips species.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and the adult stage. The pupal stage often occurs in the soil or in crevices of plant structures.

In tropical and subtropical climates, this species can maintain continuous generations throughout the year, especially when temperatures remain above 20°C.

Global distribution is primarily facilitated by the international trade of flowers, nursery stock, and ornamental plants, which allows the species to travel across borders.

What it damages

The species utilizes its punch-and-suck mouthparts to feed on the plant's internal cellular contents, which causes the surrounding tissue to collapse and turn necrotic.

Their host range primarily includes various ornamental flowers, such as orchids, roses, and chrysanthemums, alongside several tropical vegetable crops.

Thrips prefer to aggregate in secluded areas like tightly closed flower buds and newly unfurled leaves, which protects them from predators and environmental hazards.

Direct damage results in stunted growth, leaf deformation, and severe cosmetic issues that render flowers unsuitable for sale in the competitive market.

Furthermore, they serve as efficient vectors for tospoviruses, which can cause severe systemic diseases that are impossible to cure once the plant is infected.

Signs of infestation

Visual symptoms often include "silvering" or white streaking on leaves and flowers, caused by the empty cell spaces left behind after feeding.

Flower buds often exhibit twisting, incomplete opening, or brown spots on the petals. Tiny black dots of fecal matter are commonly seen on affected foliage.
