Lily thrips (Frankliniella lilivora) are tiny insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera. Adult individuals typically reach about 1.5 mm in length and exhibit a dark brown to black coloration, which makes them difficult to spot on dark foliage.

The insect possesses slender wings equipped with long fringes of hairs, allowing them to fly between host plants. Larvae are usually lighter in color, ranging from white to yellowish, and pass through several developmental stages before reaching maturity.

The biological cycle of this pest is highly sensitive to environmental factors. Warm and moderately dry weather conditions accelerate their reproduction, enabling multiple generations to occur during a single growing season.

Overwintering usually takes place in the adult stage, sheltered within the soil, under debris, or directly inside the scales of lily bulbs. This strategy allows them to survive cold periods and emerge as soon as temperatures rise.

These pests are highly mobile and can reproduce both sexually and through parthenogenesis, which explains their ability to rapidly colonize entire garden beds if control measures are not taken in time.

What it damages

The primary hosts for Frankliniella lilivora are lilies. However, they can also infest various other bulbous ornamental plants that grow in proximity, making them a general threat to diverse floral collections.

Heavy infestations prevent buds from opening properly, causing them to wither and drop off prematurely. This leads to total loss of blooming for the affected plants, which is highly detrimental for nursery owners.

Extended feeding by thrips can weaken the bulbs, making them prone to secondary infections such as fungal rots, which eventually lead to the decay of the entire bulb during the storage or resting phase.

Signs of infestation

The first visual signs of infestation are small, silvery-white spots on the leaves. These patches often merge into larger areas of dead tissue as the insects continue their feeding activity.

Flower buds display visible distortion, with brownish streaks and bleached sections on the petals. Often, buds may fail to open or appear stunted and deformed, which is a classic symptom of thrips presence.

Black excrement spots on the undersides of leaves or within leaf axils act as a diagnostic indicator of the pest's presence, marking the locations where colonies are most active.

Infested plants show clear signs of stunted growth, turning yellow and losing their aesthetic appeal. In severe cases, the entire plant may begin to wilt and die if the infestation goes untreated.

During the peak of their activity, you can find the insects by gently shaking a flower or a leaf over a sheet of white paper, where their small, slender bodies become easily visible against the background.

Control measures

Successful management of lily thrips requires a multi-faceted approach, starting with strict sanitation. Removing weeds and clearing away plant debris is crucial to eliminate overwintering sites for the insects.

Careful inspection of bulbs before planting is essential to prevent introducing the pest to new areas. Treating bulbs with appropriate insecticides or heat treatment can effectively kill dormant thrips before the growing season.

Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides, particularly those containing neonicotinoids or spinosyns. It is vital to rotate different chemical classes to prevent the development of pesticide resistance in the thrips population.

Using yellow or blue sticky traps is a recommended practice for monitoring pest levels and timing the application of control products. These traps also help to reduce the adult population in greenhouses.
