Citrus thrips (Frankliniella citripes) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae, known for being a significant agricultural pest.

The adult insect is very small, typically measuring between 1 to 2 mm in length, with a slender body that ranges in color from light yellow to orange-brown.

These insects possess two pairs of wings that are fringed with fine hairs, allowing them to fly and spread rapidly throughout an orchard or greenhouse environment.

The life cycle comprises several distinct stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult, with pupation often occurring in the soil or under bark.

Development is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer conditions facilitating faster generation turnover, which can lead to multiple outbreaks within a single growing season.

What it damages

Citrus thrips primarily target various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits, causing economic losses for growers worldwide.

They feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking the cell contents, which causes the epidermal cells to collapse and die, leaving behind distorted growth.

The most severe damage occurs on young fruit, where feeding results in characteristic silvering or hardened, corky ring-shaped scars around the stem end of the fruit.

Leaves that are attacked show signs of crinkling, curling, and premature dropping, leading to a reduction in the overall health and productivity of the citrus trees.

Even though the fruit pulp remains largely unaffected, the aesthetic damage to the rind significantly reduces the marketability and quality of the produce.
