How to identify
The tea shot hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatior) is a small wood-boring beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family and Scolytinae subfamily.
Adult beetles are tiny, measuring approximately 2.0 to 2.5 mm in length, with females being significantly larger and darker than the males.
These beetles are known for their symbiotic relationship with fungi, specifically Fusarium species, which they carry in specialized structures called mycangia.
The lifecycle involves the beetle boring tunnels into the wood and inoculating these tunnels with fungal spores, which serve as the primary food source for their larvae.
Due to the cryptic nature of the beetle and its similarity to other members of the Euwallacea species complex, accurate identification often requires expert analysis.
What it damages
This pest has a very wide host range, attacking hundreds of plant species, including commercially vital crops like tea, cacao, coffee, and avocado.
The damage is primarily caused by the fungal infection introduced by the beetle, which colonizes the xylem and restricts the flow of water and nutrients.
Heavy infestations lead to vascular wilt, dieback of branches, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree due to blocked vascular tissues.

Chemical control is challenging because the beetles spend most of their life cycle protected deep within the tunnels, making contact insecticides ineffective.
Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition can help plants better tolerate or resist minor attacks from the wood-boring pest.
