The Brazilian cotton weevil (Eutinobothrus brasiliensis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. It is a specialized pest that feeds exclusively on plants belonging to the Malvaceae family.
Adult insects are small beetles with a distinct elongated rostrum typical of weevils. Their bodies are usually dark, providing camouflage against the stems of cotton plants.
Larvae are legless, whitish or yellowish, with a hardened dark head capsule. They are exclusively internal feeders, spending their entire larval stage protected inside plant tissues.
The life cycle is closely synchronized with the cotton growth stages. Adult weevils are most active during the vegetative phase when the cotton crop is developing its primary structure.
Identifying this pest can be difficult due to its cryptic behavior. Systematic scouting of the base of the stems is essential for early detection of infestation signs.
What it damages
The primary host for this pest is the cotton plant (Gossypium). It causes significant damage by boring into the stems and root collars of young and developing cotton plants.
Beyond cultivated cotton, this insect can maintain populations on wild Malvaceae species, which serve as reservoirs between planting seasons.
The larval feeding destroys the plant's vascular system, which interrupts the transport of essential nutrients and water from the roots to the upper parts of the plant.
This disruption causes the plants to wilt, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the plant, leading to a substantial decrease in fiber yield.
Increased vulnerability to secondary infections, such as root rot or fungal diseases, is a common consequence of the structural damage caused by this weevil.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of infestation is the presence of small entry holes at the base of the cotton stem, often surrounded by a fine powder or frass.
Sudden, irreversible wilting of leaves during the daytime, even with adequate soil moisture, suggests that the vascular system of the stem has been compromised.
Dissecting a suspect plant will reveal winding larval tunnels inside the stem tissues, where larvae or pupae can often be found during the growth cycle.

Chemical control focuses on applying systemic insecticides early in the season. Once the larvae penetrate deep into the stem tissues, contact-based products become significantly less effective.
Monitoring the adult population using pheromone-based traps provides essential data for timing pesticide applications accurately to reduce infestation levels.
