The forewings have a complex grayish-brown camouflage pattern, allowing the moth to blend in perfectly with the bark of coniferous trees during the day.

The larvae go through several developmental stages, changing color from light beige to dark brown as they mature. The body is sparsely covered with hairs and the head is distinctly dark.

Identifying the pest in the field is challenging due to the nocturnal behavior of the adults, so diagnostics often rely on spotting frass near larval entry points on the bark.
