Embia amadorae is a species of webspinner belonging to the order Embioptera and the family Embiidae. These insects are easily distinguished by their elongated bodies and unique ability to spin silk from glands located on their forelegs.
The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with winged males often capable of flight, while females are wingless and remain within their silk galleries for their entire lives. Their color ranges from light yellowish-brown to dark brown.
Embia amadorae thrives in environments that offer protection and humidity. They spend most of their existence within intricate networks of silk tunnels, which they construct on plant surfaces, under leaf litter, or within soil crevices.
Reproduction occurs in secure, humid environments. Females lay eggs within the silk tunnels and provide maternal care by guarding the clutch, ensuring that the offspring remain protected until they hatch.
The nymphs resemble smaller versions of the adults. Throughout their development, they continuously expand their silk galleries, which is essential for both their protection and their feeding activities on the host plant.
What it damages

Chemical control can be difficult due to the protective nature of the silk tunnels. Targeted application of systemic or contact insecticides during the nymphal activity phase is recommended for better results.
Biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi or beneficial nematodes, can be used to penetrate the silk galleries and infect the colonies, providing a safer alternative to harsh pesticides.
Maintaining proper soil aeration and avoiding excessive moisture in the root zone can help create an environment that is less favorable for the establishment of webspinner colonies.
In controlled environments like greenhouses, regular monitoring with sticky traps for winged males and routine visual inspections of stem bases are crucial to preventing the development of a large-scale population.
