How to identify

The sweet potato stem weevil (Cylas femoralis) is a destructive pest belonging to the Brentidae family. These insects typically measure between 6 and 8 mm in length.

Adult weevils have a distinct elongated snout and a metallic-looking body, usually dark blue or black, with reddish-brown legs. They are elusive and often hidden from view.

The larvae are legless, creamy-white in color, with a prominent yellowish-brown head capsule. They develop exclusively inside the plant tissue, gaining protection from predators.

The lifecycle proceeds through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Temperature plays a critical role in the rate of development, with warmer climates facilitating more generations per year.

Females lay eggs in small cavities they create in the stems or tubers, which allows the newly hatched larvae immediate access to a food source.

What it damages
