The coffee berry borer (Coccotrypes vulgaris) is a small beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family. Adults are typically dark brown or black, reaching approximately 1.5 to 2 mm in length, with a cylindrical body shape.
This pest is highly mobile and possesses strong flight capabilities, which facilitate its rapid spread across coffee plantations during the fruit development stage. Its head is retracted beneath the pronotum, a specialized adaptation for wood and fruit-boring insects.
The entire life cycle of the beetle is intimately tied to the coffee berry. Females bore into the fruit, creating entrance holes, and deposit eggs directly inside the coffee seeds. Larvae feed and mature within this confined environment.
Pupation occurs within the seeds, completing the life cycle in about a month under favorable conditions. Multiple generations can overlap during a single season, leading to rapid population growth in favorable climates.
High relative humidity and warm temperatures (25–30°C) are essential for the survival and reproduction of this beetle. Under these conditions, the pest can quickly reach infestation levels that threaten commercial viability.
What it damages
The primary hosts for Coccotrypes vulgaris are coffee berries (Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora). Both adults and larvae cause damage by consuming the endosperm, effectively destroying the interior of the coffee bean.
While coffee is the main target, the beetle may also infest other exotic fruits or seeds located within the vicinity of infested coffee trees, acting as a reservoir for local populations.
The most significant impact is the drastic reduction in coffee quality. Infested beans are often rejected during grading, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers and processors due to the destruction of the product's market value.
Furthermore, the physical damage inflicted by the beetles provides entry points for secondary infections, such as fungi and bacteria, which cause the decay of the berry flesh and further diminish the final product quality.
Economic damage is exacerbated by the cost of sorting and cleaning, as mechanical sorting is often required to remove damaged beans from the harvest prior to export or roasting.
Signs of infestation
The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular holes on the surface of the coffee berries. These holes are typically found on the disc area or near the base of the berry.
When an infested berry is cut open, one can observe tunnels filled with a powder-like substance, which is a mix of bean remains and larval excrement. This debris is a classic indicator of active infestation.
Premature ripening or drying of the berries while still attached to the branch often suggests that internal feeding by the larvae has disrupted the plant's nutrient supply to the fruit.
Adult beetles can occasionally be spotted on the surface of berries during the early morning or late afternoon when they are actively seeking new berries for colonization.
Darkened or necrotic tissue around the entrance hole is a common symptom caused by secondary microbial infection following the initial mechanical entry of the adult female.
Control measures
Sanitation is the cornerstone of integrated pest management for this species. Removing all ripe, overripe, and dropped berries from the plantation and the ground is critical to starving the population.
Destroying the collected infested berries, preferably by burning or deep burial, ensures that the remaining pupae or larvae do not emerge as the next generation of adults to re-infest the trees.
Monitoring using pheromone-based traps is highly recommended to track beetle flight patterns and determine the optimal timing for intervention, ensuring that control measures are both timely and efficient.
Chemical control should be applied judiciously, focusing on the periods of peak flight activity. Selecting systemic or contact insecticides that are approved for coffee cultivation helps manage the pest while minimizing environmental impact.
