Description

How to identify

The cardamom borer beetle (Coccotrypes cardamomi) belongs to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a minute beetle specifically adapted to infest seeds and fruits.

Adult beetles exhibit a cylindrical body shape typical of bark beetles. Their coloration ranges from dark brown to black, and their bodies are covered with fine, sparse hairs.

The life cycle of the insect is intrinsically linked to cardamom capsules. Females bore into the capsules to lay their eggs, providing a protective environment for their offspring.

The larvae are apodous (legless), white to cream-colored, with a distinct brown head capsule. The entire development from egg to adult occurs within a single host fruit.

Reproduction takes place entirely inside the fruit, which makes detecting an infestation during the early stages extremely challenging for farmers.

What it damages

The primary host for this pest is cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum). The beetle causes severe economic losses by destroying the market value of the spice.

The pest attacks fruit both during the maturation phase on the plant and subsequently during the storage phase if the capsules were already infested in the field.

A single capsule can house an entire population of beetles, which consume the seeds entirely, rendering the product useless for commercial sale.

Damage results in significant weight loss, degradation of flavor and aromatic profiles, and physical destruction of the valuable spice capsules.

In cases of severe outbreaks, the borer beetle can destroy 30–50% of the total crop yield, posing a major threat to spice production sustainability.

Signs of infestation

The most visible sign of infestation is the presence of minute entry holes on the exterior of the cardamom capsule.

Upon opening damaged fruits, one can find internal tunnels filled with frass (insect excrement), along with larvae or adult beetles inside the seed chamber.

Capsules may appear externally sound; however, they feel hollow or crumble easily under light pressure due to internal tissue destruction.

A characteristic sign is the accumulation of fine, dust-like powder around the entry point, created by the beetle's boring activities.

Significant reduction in crop weight during storage, accompanied by the appearance of adult beetles on the packaging, confirms a high infestation rate.

Control measures

The primary control method is maintaining strict orchard hygiene, which includes the prompt collection and destruction of all fallen and infested capsules.

Regular field monitoring using pheromone traps is highly recommended to detect the arrival of adult beetles and time interventions accordingly.

During the post-harvest phase, drying the cardamom to a low moisture content is crucial to prevent larval survival and further population growth in storage.

Chemical control measures should be applied only during peak flight periods, using products strictly authorized for use on edible spice crops.

  • Clearing surrounding weeds and debris that serve as alternative hosts.
  • Implementing crop rotation and proper spatial isolation for new plantations.
  • Ensuring all planting material is fumigated or treated prior to introduction to the field.
