How to identify
The Retiniana leafroller (Choristoneura retiniana) is a moth belonging to the family Tortricidae. Adult moths are characterized by a wingspan ranging from 20 to 25 mm, featuring distinct reticulated (net-like) patterns on their forewings.
Larvae pass through several growth stages, typically displaying a pale green to brownish body color with a dark, sclerotized head. The presence of fine hairs on the body helps them blend into foliage, making them difficult to detect without close inspection.
Females lay eggs in tight, overlapping clusters on the upper surface of leaves. These egg masses resemble small, hardened scales, providing excellent camouflage against the leaf surface and surrounding vegetation.
Overwintering occurs primarily in the larval stage. Young larvae construct dense, silk-lined hibernacula in protected areas such as bark crevices, branch crotches, or leaf debris, waiting for spring temperatures to rise.
