How to identify
The silver fir moth (Choristoneura murinana) is a member of the Tortricidae family. It is a notorious pest primarily affecting silver fir trees in Europe.
The adult moth has a wingspan ranging from 18 to 24 mm. Their forewings feature a mottled pattern of greyish-brown to dark brown, providing effective camouflage.
Larvae, or caterpillars, grow up to 20 mm in length. They typically exhibit a yellowish-green or brownish body with a distinctive shiny dark head.
The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, having one generation per year. Its cryptic life style makes it difficult to detect during early stages.
The moth is most active during the night, utilizing pheromones for mating which is a critical point for monitoring strategies.
What it damages
While the silver fir (Abies alba) is the primary host, this pest can also infest various spruce species growing in mixed forests.
Caterpillars cause damage by feeding on young, developing buds in the early spring, effectively destroying the tree's potential for new growth.

When it appears

The larval development phase lasts about 4 to 6 weeks, followed by pupation, which occurs within the damaged foliage or between needles bound by silk.
Adult moths emerge in June or July, engaging in mating rituals and laying eggs in flat, tile-like masses on the upper surface of needles.
After egg development, the neonate larvae emerge, crawl to their overwintering sites, and settle for the coming winter without feeding on foliage.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of infestation is the presence of fine silk webbing connecting needles and shoots together into makeshift nests.
Observation of destroyed or hollowed-out buds is a primary indicator of larval activity during the early spring season.
Trees affected by high populations appear reddish or scorched from a distance due to the mass of damaged and dying needles hanging from silk.
Frass (larval excrement) accumulation on the branches or on the ground beneath the tree canopy confirms active feeding by the larvae.
Sparse crowns, particularly in the upper canopy areas, are common visual cues that suggest a well-established colony of this pest.
