How to identify

Granary weevils (family Dryophthoridae, order Coleoptera) are a group of major stored-product pests, including primary species such as Sitophilus granarius and Sitophilus oryzae.

Adult beetles typically measure between 2.5 and 4 mm in length and are easily recognized by their elongated body and prominent snout (rostrum).

The color of the beetles ranges from reddish-brown to almost black, depending on the species and age of the individual.

The larvae are legless, white, and fleshy, with a robust head and mouthparts adapted to feeding inside the endosperm of the grain kernel.

Pupation occurs entirely within the grain, protected by the hull, which makes the immature stages highly resilient to conventional contact insecticides.

What it damages

These pests infest a wide range of cereals, including wheat, barley, maize, rye, and rice, causing significant qualitative and quantitative losses.

In addition to raw grain, they can infest processed products such as flour, pasta, and various legumes kept in long-term storage.

The larva hollows out the grain from the inside, consuming the nutritious endosperm and destroying the germ, rendering the seed non-viable.

Infested grain becomes susceptible to secondary infections by molds and fungi, as the insects’ metabolic activity increases grain moisture and temperature.

Economic damage is caused not only by the direct loss of mass but also by the reduction in the market value and hygiene standards of the product.

When it appears

The life cycle and reproduction rate of the granary weevil are heavily influenced by the temperature and moisture levels of the storage environment.

Under optimal conditions, such as 25-27°C and grain moisture above 14%, a complete life cycle can be finished in approximately one month.

Adult weevils are long-lived and can survive for several months, with females laying hundreds of eggs throughout their lifespan.

The female bores a hole into the grain, deposits a single egg, and seals it with a gelatinous plug to protect it from predators and environment.

In unheated warehouses, their activity slows down during winter, but they remain dormant and resume reproduction as soon as temperatures rise.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of small, round emergence holes on the surface of individual grains.

The presence of fine dust (frass) or floury residue indicates active feeding and development of the larvae within the grain mass.

Grain heating is a critical indicator; localized increases in temperature are often caused by the heat produced by the insects' metabolic processes.

A musty or off-odor emanating from the grain pile is a common symptom of advanced infestation and mold development.

  • Clumping of grains due to moisture and web-forming secondary pests
  • Detection of hollow kernels during cleaning or sieving

Control measures

Sanitation is the first line of defense; warehouses must be thoroughly cleaned of old grain debris and dust before accepting a new harvest.

Maintaining grain moisture content below 13% is essential, as dry grain is less conducive to the rapid development of the weevil population.

Regular temperature monitoring using probes helps identify hotspots, allowing for early intervention before the infestation spreads.

Fumigation with professional-grade gases like phosphine is the standard procedure to eliminate all developmental stages of the insect within the grain.

Physical methods, such as cooling the grain through aeration or mechanical cleaning via aspiration, can effectively reduce the population density.
