The tea leaf roller (Adoxophyes fasciata) is a lepidopteran pest belonging to the Tortricidae family. Adult moths typically have a wingspan of 15–20 mm and exhibit mottled brownish or ochre markings on their forewings, allowing excellent camouflage.

The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in flat, overlapping masses on the upper surface of the leaves, resembling small scales.

Larvae, commonly known as caterpillars, are the most damaging stage. They are typically light green with a brown head, becoming very active when disturbed and often dropping from the leaf on a silken thread.

Developmental rate is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity. In tropical and subtropical regions, multiple generations can occur annually, leading to persistent infestation pressure.

Identification is facilitated by pheromone traps, which are essential tools in modern pest management to detect the onset of flight and timing of larval emergence.

What it damages

The tea leaf roller primarily targets the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), feeding on the tender apical shoots and young, flush leaves. This damage is particularly detrimental as these specific parts are the harvested commodity.

Beyond tea, this species is known to infest various citrus species and other horticultural crops, which makes it a significant polyphagous pest in agricultural landscapes.

Caterpillars create feeding sites by webbing leaves together. They skeletonize leaves by consuming the parenchyma, leaving only the veins intact, which disrupts photosynthesis and stunts plant growth.

Economic damage is twofold: the reduction of total biomass and the loss of product quality, as damaged leaves are unsuitable for high-grade tea processing.

Severe infestations can lead to significant yield losses and weaken the bushes, making them susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress.

When it appears

Activity generally begins in the early spring as temperatures rise. The lifecycle is continuous in warmer climates, with peak populations occurring during the wet and warm months of the year.

Summer conditions usually promote the fastest development, often resulting in overlapping generations. This means larvae of all ages may be present on the bushes simultaneously.

As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, the rate of development slows down. The insect typically enters the winter season as a larva, hiding in webbed leaves or crevices on the bark.

Weather patterns, particularly rainfall and humidity, play a critical role in survival rates. Excessive rainfall can occasionally suppress populations, while moderate, humid conditions are ideal for outbreaks.

Producers must monitor seasonal transitions carefully to determine the optimal timing for intervention, especially before larvae protect themselves inside leaf rolls.

Signs of infestation

The most recognizable sign is the presence of webbed or rolled leaves at the tips of the shoots. These structures serve as both a shelter and a food source for the developing larvae.

Feeding damage is evident through irregular holes or missing leaf margins on young shoots. If a leaf roll is opened, the larva or its frass (excrement) will usually be present.

Egg masses, while small, can be detected on the upper leaf surface during routine scouting, providing an early warning of an impending infestation.

  • Presence of silken webbing between leaves.

Control measures

Cultural control is a cornerstone of management, involving the regular pruning and removal of infested shoots. This physically reduces the larval population and prevents spread.

Biological control methods are highly favored for sustainable tea production. The use of egg parasitoids, such as Trichogramma species, can effectively keep populations below economic thresholds.

Biopesticides derived from Bacillus thuringiensis are highly effective against larval stages while remaining safe for the environment and non-target organisms.

Chemical control should be used judiciously, strictly as a last resort. Selective insecticides that minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects are preferred to maintain the ecological balance of the plantation.

Strict phytosanitary measures, including the inspection of new nursery stock, are essential to prevent the introduction and spread of the tea leaf roller to non-infested areas.
