Biological defense mechanism

Prestop, developed by the Finnish company VERDERA, is a specialized bio-fungicide based on the fungus Gliocladium catenulatum (strain J1446). Unlike conventional chemical agents, Prestop functions as a living biological barrier. Formulated as a wettable powder, it contains a high concentration of active spores that colonize the root zone and plant surface, establishing a natural defense system against pathogens.

Technical operation of the active strain

• Competitive exclusion: The J1446 strain rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere and leaf surfaces, physically occupying the niche where pathogens would otherwise establish themselves, effectively outcompeting them for resources.
• Enzymatic action: The fungus produces powerful enzymes (chitinases and glucanases) that break down the cell walls of harmful fungi, including Fusarium, Phytophthora, and various root rots.
• Mycelial shielding: A dense protective net of Gliocladium hyphae envelops the root system, preventing the entry of blackleg and Pythium infections.

Agronomic advantages and application

Prestop is an essential tool for integrated pest management. Classified under the 4th hazard category (low toxicity) with a 0-day pre-harvest interval, it provides unprecedented flexibility for vegetable, decorative, and berry crop producers.
