Humic substances are a complex mixture of high-molecular organic compounds formed during the humification of plant residues. This group includes humic acids, fulvic acids, and humins, which are the fundamental pillars of soil fertility.

The primary mode of action involves improving soil structure and its physical-chemical properties. These compounds exhibit high biological activity, stimulating root development and activating metabolic processes within the plant organism.

They act as natural chelating agents: they bind heavy metal ions, converting them into forms inaccessible to plants, while simultaneously holding essential nutrients in a bioavailable state.

These substances act as a buffer, smoothing out sharp changes in soil pH, which is crucial for sensitive agricultural crops under intensive cultivation technologies.

Regular enrichment of the soil with humus promotes the development of beneficial soil microbiota, which participates in atmospheric nitrogen fixation and the processing of difficult-to-access mineral compounds.

What it targets

While not a pesticide, these substances effectively combat abiotic stresses such as drought, soil salinity, low temperatures, and high soil toxicity.

They suppress the development of phytopathogens by enhancing the plant's natural immunity and creating a competitive environment for beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere.

Rates and timing

Application is carried out through liquid concentrates (potassium or sodium humates) or through the addition of organic fertilizers such as compost, manure, or peat.

The optimal application time is spring pre-sowing soil treatment or active growth stages via foliar feeding to ensure a rapid start for the crop.

Application rates vary depending on the initial humus content; for depleted soils, doses can reach 5-10 kg of active substance per hectare for soil application.

During seed treatment, humic preparations are used in low concentrations to improve germination energy and protect seedlings from adverse conditions.

Consistent use helps maintain a positive organic matter balance, which is essential in intensive farming systems utilizing high rates of mineral fertilizers.

Restrictions

Excessive humic substances from pure concentrates are rare in practice and generally do not lead to phytotoxicity.

The main limitation is economic viability: their application must be integrated with proper agronomic practices to fully realize their potential.

It is not recommended to mix humates with acidic fertilizers or strong mineral acids, as this may cause humic acids to precipitate and lose their biological activity.

When using humic substances on alkaline soils, calcium levels must be monitored to avoid rapid loss of activity of the applied substances.

It is important to remember that humic substances are not a direct replacement for mineral nutrition, but rather a powerful tool to enhance its efficiency and plant uptake.
